If you have the sub layer set to 0% opacity then the image will not appear at all even if you set Layer 1 to 100% opacity. For some reason both layers container their own opacity settings and both must be at 100% for the image to appear at 100% opacity.

When originally placing the image that I wanted to trace a “Layer 1” was created in the layers panel. No matter what I set the opacity to the image was not visible. I have no idea as to why the visibility of the image that I was tracing completely disappeared. After doing so the image that I was tracing disappeared from visibility. Dropped the opacity of the image down to 20% and drew a few paths. How it all started: I created a new art board then placed an image of a cartoon character on the art board to trace. I tried everything that everyone suggested in this thread and none of them solved my problem. Had to create an account just to share my problem and how I fixed it as it kicked my butt trying to figure it out. Neither one of us can figure it out, did you ever figure it out? I crdeated the image originally in Illustrator CS3 I think, but I am viewing it in both 5.5 and 6 and the result is this lame opacity thing….

I even broke down and showed it to one of the moron salesmen (he used to be a designer) at my work (I run an HP Indigo digital press, but I have a background in prepress, degree in graphic design). Each object says it’s at full opacity, but it’s not….I don’t have any layer set to any blending mode but normal, I’ve ungrouped all of the objects, checked to see if the objects were set to “dim images to 50%” or whatever that option is when you double click a layer. I have an image with a moderate number of layers and I’m having an issue where none of my objects are at full opacity (except when I view them in Isolation Mode).

Did you ever figure this one out, because I have been scouring the internet for some kind of answer to a similar issue.
